A Prayer for the New Year

Blessed Lord, as we prepare to leave one year behind and start on a new one, we thank You for making all things new and fresh. We thank You for what You've allowed into our lives this past year, the good along with the challenges, for they all remind us how much we need You and rely on Your presence filling us every day.

We pray for Your spirit to lead us each step of this new year. We ask You to guide our decisions and turn our hearts to deeply desire You above all else. We ask that You keep our footsteps firm and on solid ground, helping us to be consistent and faithful.

Help us to be generous and kind. Help us to look to the needs of others, and not be consumed by only our own needs and desires. May we be lovers of truth; and may the fruits of Your spirit be evident in our lives—Your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Shine Your light in us, through us, over us. May we make a difference in this world, for Your glory and purposes. Set Your way before us, this day and every day.

Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Greetings All,

1.    On behalf of Fr. Bob, Anita and myself, thank you to all of you for your kindness, gifts and prayers.  I ask you to continue to pray for Fr. Bob and Anita’s well-being.  Please also pray for Fr. Steve Stanberry who serves Archbold St. Peter and Fayette Our Lady of Mercy Parishes; he is fighting cancer.  Fr. John Stites thanks you all for your prayers and support.  Thank you to all who helped at Christmas: the children and teachers and parents who helped with the pageants, all who helped to decorate, the people who sang carols, all who gave for the Giving Tree and Parish Center and other charitable works.  Thank you to our musicians for excellent music and all who helped in any way to celebrate the gift of Christ.

2.    Thank you to Jeff Weber and Pete Kime who helped fix the water tank issue in the basement of St Mike’s Rectory at Christmas time.

3.    Thank you to the catechists who participate in the Luminous Ministries Retreat this Saturday at Marysdale on Jan. 11.

4.    A staff Meeting with Fr. Jake is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14 @ 5 p.m. at St Mike’s Rectory.

God bless you all, Fr. Jake

Looking For Lectors

We are in need of lectors for Saturday Mass. If you are looking for a way to become a bigger part of your parish, this is a fulfilling way to do so! The Word of God proclaimed in the liturgy is a living Word with power to nourish and transform both those who proclaim it and those who hear it.

Anyone who is interested can contact Karen Newton or Claudia Burkholder. See page 1 of the bulletin for contact information.

In January, St. Michael’s will be holding a couple of fundraising events for the new Parish Center.

Wednesday, January 15th and Tuesday, January 28th

have been scheduled with a couple of local restaurants who have graciously agreed to donate

a portion of the food proceeds on these days in

support of our fundraising efforts.

We will be providing coupons for

parishioners to distribute to friends and relatives

to use on these days.

Wall of Giving

The Parents for Religious Education, (PRE), and students who attend St. Michael’s parish

have prepared a “Wall of Giving” fundraiser to raise money for the new Parish Center.

The wall can be found in the back of the church off on the left as you enter.

With a little support from a lot of people, (you and me), we all can make this a reality!

Please give generously!

We all know that a conversation involves both talking AND listening. Good communication is only achieved by an exchange, not just saying what we want to say. The same is true when we communicate with God. We need to be sure to take the time to quiet ourselves during our prayer time to hear, or more likely feel, a response from God. We cannot expect a relationship to grow deeper if we never allow ourselves to experience Him.

Parents are the first to introduce their children to the voice of God. It is our responsibility to teach them how to hear Him and the right choices they need to make when we all are surrounded by the noise of the world. Besides following the Ten Commandments, here are some tips to discuss with your children on dealing with the challenge of staying strong in our faith while living in the world:

·         exercise control in and reverence in sexual matters. Someday they will be a spouse, a parent. Keep that respect for themselves and their friends.

·         develop wholesome relationships -a friend who tries to persuade you to do something you know is wrong is not a true friend. Fear of losing a friend should not be more important than making right choices and standing up for yourself.

·         be honest and responsible with material things as well as the reputation and character of others. Teach your children that they do not need material things because their friends have them. Everyone says they do not like drama, so teach them to not talk about others in a disrespectful or gossiping way.

·         keep your commitments to relationships and honor the relationships of others. Teach them that they do not “own” their friends and their friends do not “own” them. It is okay for everyone to have different friendships; they just need to respect each other.

Be sure to deepen your own prayer time with 5 minutes of being still and listening. It will work wonders for you!
