The Thirteenth Sunday Ordinary Time June 28, 2020

The Liturgy this week continues to instruct us in the elements of discipleship. We’re told that even the most humble among us have a share in the mission Christ gives to His Church. We’re not all called to the ministry of the Apostles, or to be prophets like Elisha in today’s First Reading. But each of us is called to a holy life (see 2 Timothy 1:91 Thessalonians 4:3). At Baptism our lives were joined forever to the cross of Christ, as Paul tells us in today’s Epistle. Baptized into His death, we’re to renounce sin and live for God in Christ Jesus. We are to follow Him, each of us taking up our personal cross, as Jesus says in today’s Gospel. That doesn’t mean we will all be asked to suffer a martyr’s death. But each of us is called to self-denial, to the offering of our lives in service of God’s plan. Jesus must be elevated to first place in our lives—above even our closest bonds of kinship and love. By Baptism, we’ve been made part of a new family—the kingdom of God, the Church. We are to proclaim that kingdom with our lives, bringing our fathers and mothers, and all men and women, to live as “little ones” under the fatherhood of God and the kingship of the Holy One. We do this by opening our hearts and homes to the service of the Lord, following the Shunnamite woman’s example in today’s First Reading. As Jesus tells us, we’re to receive others—not only prophets but also little children, the poor, and the imprisoned—as we receive Christ Himself (see Matthew 18:525:31–46). As we sing in today’s Psalm, we are to testify to His favors and kindness in our lives. We’re to hold fast to the promise—that if we have died with Christ, we shall also live, that if we lose our lives for His sake, we shall find our reward, and walk forever in His countenance.

VACATION: Father Jake will be on vacation from after 8 a.m. First Friday Mass on July 3 through the morning of Saturday, July 11.

MEETINGS:  Parish and finance council meetings for both parishes will be during the first week of July as follows:

St. Isidore Finance Council, Tue June 30, 7:30pm at Delaware Bend basement and/or hall.

Parish Councils for both parishes, Wed July 1, 7:30pm at St. Michael’s basement

St. Michael Finance Council, Thursday July 2, 7pm at St. Michael’s basement

SCAM: There are people trying to scam our parishioners pretending to be Fr. Jake.  It is truly mind baffling to understand why someone would want to pretend to be Fr. Jake.  Please remember that his primary mode of communication is via phone call.  And if you get a request for any monetary gift, please ignore the scammers.  Let us pray that someday scammers will be able to focus time on prayer and service to other people instead of deceiving and stealing from their brothers and sisters.  May the Lord help us all to pray more.

MESSAGE TO FIRST COMMUNICANTS:  Congratulations to our second graders on making their First Communion! Jesus comes to you for the first time because He loves you very much, just like your mothers and fathers. Every time you come to Mass with your family, you may receive Holy Communion with them. Always remember, you want to be the best you can be to have a holy home for Jesus to visit you. Talk to Jesus, tell Him about your life and thank Him for all things, but especially for coming to you in Holy Communion! Please pray for your parents that they will continue to be good examples for you. My gratitude to Kent and Mary Jo Beilharz who worked so well the children and their families as they prepared for both Penance and Holy Eucharist. Also, to Ronda Fabiano who gave her help and assistance to coordinate, thank you very much!

God bless you, Fr. Jake
