 Support Our Retired Priests:

Please consider a donation to Perpetuate the Gift Appeal being held the weekend of October 7-8. Your gift benefits our retired diocesan priests and your Parish. Once a priest retires he is responsible for his own personal expenses: medical, housing, clothing, and food. All funds contributed between October 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017, help reduce the amount the parish contributes to the fund. A gift of cash or check can be sent to Perpetuate the Gift, PO Box 954, Toledo, OH 43697 or placed in the parish collection. A gift may also be made online at If you would like to give a gift of stock or designate a bequest to help our retired priests, please contact Christopher Holinski at 419.214.4951 or email at

All are welcome to join us in celebrating 100 years since Our Lady appeared to the children of Fatima. October 13, Friday starting with Mass at St John's at 9:00AM Defiance and Holy Hour of prayer time with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament ending with Benediction Thank You. God Bless You

Thank you! Ronda Fabiano

This coming week, the parents of all students in our Religious Education program will be receiving in the mail opt-out forms for the third and fourth Protecting Youth lessons that are mandated by the Toledo Diocese as part of the Protecting God's Children initiative. These are age-appropriate lessons for our children that will take place during their regular class time. Any new families to our program this year will also receive a copy of the Touching Safety Guide along with the opt-out form. All parishes in the Diocese will be presenting this program to their students at some point during the year.

The opt-out forms are being sent 2 weeks before the scheduled lessons which will be held on Sunday, October 15 for all classes this year, and will include both lessons meant for this year. If you have more than one child in our program, you may put all of them on the form since the sessions will all take place on one day. The opt-out forms must be turned by the start of the sessions if you do not want your child/children to participate in these classes. If the opt-out form is not turned in by the start of their lesson, your child will participate.

Many students are offered lessons or assemblies on similar material and topics through the public school systems. As sad of a topic as it is, it is a good option to have it available through the church where we can help parents discuss these issues with their children in a caring, Christian environment. The safety of our children is a top concern.

Parents are welcome to attend the class. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by calling the convent (419-497-3122) or my home {419-782-3924}, or by emailing me at

Your Sister in Christ,

Ronda Fabiano

Youth Group Leader Needed

Are you looking for a way to be involved with the parish? Currently looking for an adult to be in charge of organizing activities for the youth group! Most often the youth group does an activity each month. Activities can be recreational or service oriented.  Plenty of adults are available to help, but we need someone willing to plan and organize activities. Interested persons should contact Ronda Fabiano at 419-497-3122 or by email at

Diocese of Toledo Perpetuate The Gift Appeal Frequently Asked Questions Commitment Weekend

-October 7 -8, 2017

What is "Perpetuate The Gift"?

Perpetuate The Gift is simply the annual appeal that supports our Diocesan Priests'

Retirement Fund. It signifies the beautifully unending and total commitment of our priests to our spiritual salvation, and our contribution to their retirement.

Who is eligible to receive benefits from the Priests' Retirement Fund?

A priest who is 70 years of age or has served the diocese for 40 years is eligible to receive retirement benefits. We currently have 89 retired priests and 87 active priests whose average age is 50 years old. And, when you look at the numbers, we have a lot more priests who are either retired or approaching retirement age than those who are in the first half of their careers.

Who oversees the Priests' Retirement Fund?

The fund is overseen by the Priests' Retirement Fund Board, which is a subcommittee of the Finance Council ofthe Diocese of Toledo. The Board is composed of priest representatives, both active and retired, professionals in the actuarial fields and plan administration. The plan administration and actuarial professionals are present at all board meetings.

How are the funds invested?

The funds are invested with professional fund managers in socially responsible investments, as defined by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Oversight is provided by the custodian, Priests' Retirement Board, Diocesan Investment Committee and Diocesan Finance Council.

Don't we already support the retired priests through the Collection for Retired Religious?

No, the Collection for Retired Religious does not benefit our diocesan priests. The funds for the Collection for Retired Religious support priests, brothers and sisters of the various religious communities throughout the United States.

Doesn't the parish already make a contribution to the Priests' Retirement Fund?

Yes, each parish has always provided support for the Fund. But please remember, all contributions to the Perpetuate the Gift appeal between October 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017 will reduce-dollar-for-dollar-the amount the parish contributes to the fund.

What are the typical living expenses for a retired priest?

When a priest retires, his living expenses actually increase. A retired priest is responsible for his personal expense such as food, clothing, car, housing and utility costs, and medical expenses. While a priest is active, his housing expenses are paid by the parish, school, or diocesan institution to which he is assigned. When he retires, he must provide for his own housing needs. It is important to know that many of our priests designate the Priests' Retirement Fund as a beneficiary of their estate.

What is a typical retirement income for a retired priest?

The income for a retired priest is generally derived from three sources: Priests' Retirement Fund pension, Social Security payments, and personal savings. While most individuals split their FICA tax with their employer 50/50, diocesan priests are considered self-employed by the IRS, so each priest pays the entire 15 .3% FICA tax out of his own salary.

How can I make a gift?

A gift of cash or check can be placed in your parish collection or sent to:

Perpetuate The Gift

PO Box 954

Toledo, OR 43697

Online gifts by credit card or direct debit can be made at Click on Give!

To make a gift of stock or obtain information regarding a planned gift, please contact the

Catholic Foundation at 419-244-6711.
